Yesterday was Holy Thursday, the celebration of the Fist Eucharist. True to form, Father Bala gave an amazing homily! I took so many notes, here are a few of my reflections from the mass:
- At the first Passover, the Lord told his people through Moses how to have new life and freedom from Pharaoh.
- Firstborn were sacrificed for the sake of all.
- The lamb that they ate gave them strength to escape slavey.
- It is not passive, but a conscious effort to be saved.
- With the Last Supper, God again shows how one life ends to save all.
- Christ tells us to eat his flesh, the Flesh of the Lamb of God, to give us the strength to escape the slavery of sin.
- He was fully present in the Bread and Wine then, as He continues to be present in the Eucharist today!
- Just as the miracles that Moses performed were meant to frighten the king and soften his heart, the Miracle of the Blessed Sacrament is meant to frighten the kind of sin and to soften our hearts.
- And admission is free!
- Today, free usually means worthless. Not this! This is no small, worthless meal. No! It is precious and costly. Jesus gave His own life for this Meal! But it is still free to all who believe!
- Just as God ordained that Passover occur at the same time every year, Christ called us to celebrate His Death through the Eucharist every time we meet together, in memory of Him.
- With the Washing of the Servants' Feet, Jesus removed His outer garment. In Jewish culture, this was not done. He then ties a towel around His waist, a symbol of slavery. He washed the disciples' feet as an example of servitude to others, how to be a true Christian, a follower of Christ.
- If we are not cleansed by Christ, we have no inheritance with Him.
- We often feel that we are not worthy to be washed clean by Jesus. That's true, no one is! We have all sinned and fall short. But Jesus looks past our sin and our guilt. He sees a friend, a follower, someone He loves enough to die for.
Wow, God truly loves us! Tune in for reflections from the continuation of the Triduum, Good Friday service!
