During the Mass of Light - or Easter Vigil, as it is commonly called - catechumens and candidates, those who have expressed the desire to join the Catholic Church, are received into full communion with the Church. At Vigil Mass last night, one young man was baptized, publicly professing his faith in Christ Jesus in order to join the universal Christian Faith. Along with his baptism, four other adults joined him in making their first Holy Communion, initiating them into the Catholic Church. In addition, several children made their first Holy Communion as well.
It brings so many emotions to be a part of this turning point in a person's life, to know that he or she is beginning a journey of spiritual growth. It is personally meaningful to me, as it renews my own conversions and confirmation as a Catholic Christian, my journey that began 9 years ago at Easter Vigil. I will never forget the fire that was ignited in my heart that night, the fire of the Holy Spirit that had lead me to the decision to become Catholic. I will never forget the sense of universal family I immediately felt as I partook of the true Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus, knowing that I was now joined with my brothers and sisters in Christ on a global scale. I felt at home, at peace, while feeling excited and renewed, all at once.
Easter Vigil is a beautiful mass, not only because of the music and flowers and tradition. It's the life-changing event of conversion, baptism, and confirmation that truly brings the beauty!
Please join with me in praying for the newly initiated Brothers and sisters as they begin their new lives with Christ. Let's also pray that we strive to show everyone the love that Christ shows to us as we renew our own baptismal promise.
